Aim of the assignment

One of the goals of this course is for you to be able to write, present, and be knowledgeable about contemporary visualization topics. Attending the 2022 Marvin Zelen Symposium in lieu of class will expose you to what some of the top minds in the field of visualization are thinking about currently.

Instructions

  1. Instead of meeting at our classroom, spend at least 100 minutes at the symposium, in-person or remotely. It requires advance registration. In-person attendance requires masks and proof of vaccination. The address is Simmons University, Paresky Conference Center. 300 Fenway, Boston, MA 02115.
  2. Choose two of the talks you saw as part of the symposium to write about.
  3. For each of the talks, write a paragraph discussing it. The paragraph should:
    1. Begin by listing the name of the speaker and the title of the talk. E.g., Speaker: Leeroy Jenkins, Talk: LEEEEEEERROOOOOOOY JENNKINSS!.
    2. Explain the major take-away messages or any academic contributions the presenters are claiming.
    3. Critique their take-away message in the context of what you’ve learned in class, or, similarly, critique what you have learned in class in the context of their talk. What do you agree with? Disagree with?
    4. List 3 questions you would have liked to ask the presenters.
  4. Then, in a third paragraph, contrast the two presentations you chose. Do the presenters have different perspectives, different priorities, competing views?
  5. All told, your writeup should be less than a page.

Submission instructions
